Born in Dubbo, Australia, Joseph began his training with Dubbo Ballet Studio and The Australian Ballet School interstate program, before graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2008.

Joseph was recognised as Dance Australia Magazine’s 2007 “Dancer to Watch’ and in 2009, won the West Australian Dance award for Outstanding Emerging Artist. He was awarded the prestigious 2013 Tanja Liedtke Fellowship, allowing him to travel to Germany to further his choreographic development.

As a dancer, Joseph has toured Australia, UK, Asia and USA with Chunky Move (Connected, I Like This) and Lucy Guerin Inc. (Untrained, Structure and Sadness), as well as the Force Majeure ‘Culminate’ series (Be Prepared, I Will Have Beautiful People at My Funeral Too and Everything Appears Normal). Joseph was a guest artist with West Australian Ballet, performing the title role in Ivan Cavallari’s new production of Pinocchio.

Joseph has danced several soloist roles with West Australian Ballet, Victorian Opera and with improvisation performance group Anything Is Valid Dance Theatre (AIVDT).

Highly trained and talented, Joseph has proven to be a valuable asset both on stage and off. He has worked as assistant choreographer, assistant lighting designer, assistant stage manager, rehearsal director, and dance captain in a variety of settings.

He has performed repertoire by some of the world’s most notable choreographers; Nacho Duato, John Cranko, Lucy Guerin, Youri Vamos, Garry Stewart, and Uwe Scholz. Joseph has also created roles for Sue Healey, Natalie Weir, Petr Zuska, Lucas Jervies, Ivan Cavallari and Gideon Obarzanek.

Simons began choreographing at the age of nine. His extraordinary ability to choreograph for ballet, musical theatre and contemporary dance has quickly made him highly sought after in many fields. He created works for West Australian Ballet, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus and several independent projects, including the official music video for Elisha Bones’ single Guts.
He is also a freelance journalist, and enjoys developing his ‘junkyard’ drawings (see corners of this website!) in his spare time.

Working with The Fruit Flies

I was never one to dream of running away to join the circus, but it looks as though I’ll be doing just that!

Over 2010 and 2011, I’ll be choreographing for the iconic Fruit Fly Circus for their upcoming production ‘Storm’. I’m incredibly excited about the chance to work with some very talented acrobats – and some apparatus I’ve never encountered before!

I’m always up for a new challenge, and this one will no doubt be a lot of fun. I’ll keep you up-to-date as we go.
